My daughter takes unwanted disks (like the bazillion AOhell disks that
come in the mail), draws pleasant patterns on them with markers, and
puts them in the microwave for a couple of seconds. They craze, like
pottery, and are quite pretty. We use them for coasters and such. You
can even glue felt to one side to protect your furniture.

They also make neat mobiles.
