Well, in my high school biology class, we tested ourselves
for the (genetically transmitted) ability to taste three
different chemicals (the identities of which are lost in
the mists of time), and some could taste one but not
another -- each chemical-taste-ability being determined by
a different gene.  I would think this would be similar.

I sometimes wonder if my ability to taste these chemicals
has anything to do with the faces I make if I try to eat a
raw tomato.
