If you live somewhere that doesn't have pumpkins, you could
substitute cooked, pureed red-orange fleshed squash. There are such
squashes in Japan, for example, called kabocha. In Morocco I saw
more-or-less oval squash with striped green rind, but red flesh (i
don't know its name). I'm sure there are others.
The taste won't be the same, but it is likely to be similar.
