If you're looking for used books, i HIGHLY recommend using
http://www.bookfinder.com

bookfinder.com is basically a meta-search engine of book dealers: it
searches abebooks, bibliofind, alibris, and a huge number of
additional used book vendors, as well as a small list of new book
sellers, such as amazon, barnes & noble, and some others.

amazon.com marks up the prices on used books, since they buy them
from a book vendor then resell them. I know amazon.com searches many
of the same used book dealers as bookfinder.com because i found a
book i wanted via bookfinder that was at a local bookseller. I called
them to ask them to hold it for me, but they had just been contacted
by amazon.com who bought it from them. I'm not faulting amazon for
marking up the books - that's normal business practice - but you can
find stuff more cheaply if you go to the actual used book vendor,
rather than through amazon.com.

While alibris.com is strictly a used book seller, it works similarly
to amazon.com, that is, it lists books that are being sold by various
used book dealers, with an additional price markup. I have
occasionally found a book there that wasn't listed elsewhere But
alibris.com is searched by bookfinder.com, so i don't have to make a
multitude of searches.

So, again, i recommend bookfinder.com for used book searches - and
they find vendors in Australia, England, and continental Europe that
show up, too, so it isn't just for North Americans.
