Heat shocking bacteria.  For those that don't know
that is when you plunge your poor inocent bactreia
into a water bath at about 72C (hot water basically)
which knocks holes in them.  Then you force feed them
DNA.  Or just infecting them with a virus which will
eventually kill them.  Like I said not very nice but
you don't get those cool colours.
