Here's the last batch, including a nice little puzzle to
finish with (#123).  If anyone has tried any of these, let
me know how it went; I don't think I'm quite up to turning
them into real (i.e. modern-style) recipes yet.

116 Agua para lavar el rostro

     Pies de ánades crudos y picados, una puesta de vaca,
digo de carne de vaca picada. Junto todo y destilado por
una alquitara, lavarse el rostro con esta agua. Es muy
buena.

Water for washing the face
     Raw chopped duck feet, a piece/slice of cow, I mean of
chopped beef.  All together and distilled by a still, wash
your face with this water.  It is very good.


123 Agua para lavar el rostro

     Poner en una olla nueva un azumbre de vino blanco, y
otro de agua; y poner con ella bórax, clarimente, alcanfor,
cardenillo, solimán piedra, encienso macho, garbanzos
negros, haba de mar, albayalde de tetilla, taragontia,
dormideras, pepitas de calabaças, almendras amargas: de
cada una destas cosas un maravedí. Y molerlas han cada una
por sí. Y poner también un poco de trementina lavada, y
seis limas mondadas y hechas cuartos. Y tapar la olla muy
bien, y ponerla al fuego. Y cueza hasta que mengüe tres
dedos. Y después taparla y cubrirla con ropa y dexarla
estar un buen rato que se repose. Y luego echar en ella
cuatro huevos desmenuzados con cáscara y todo. Y batirla
mucho con un palo, y tornarla a ropar e dexarla dos o tres
días. Y pasados los tres días, colar aquella agua y
guardarla en una redoma para lavarse el rostro con ella.

Water for washing the face
     Put in a new pot an azumbre (1) of white wine, and
another of water; and put with it borax, cosmetic water,
camphor, verdigris, mercury chloride(?) stone, male (2)
incense, black garbanzos, "sea beans" (3), conical white
lead (4), green dragon (Arisaema dracontium), poppies,
gourd seeds, bitter almonds: of each of these things a
maravedi.  And you have to grind them each by itself.  And
put [in] also a little washed turpentine, and six peeled
and quartered limes.  And cover the pot very well, and put
it on the fire.  And cook [it] until it reduces [by] three
fingers.  And afterwards cover it [with a lid] and cover it
with clothes and leave it be a good while to rest.  And
then put in it four crumbled eggs with shell and all.  And
beat it well with a stick, and return it to the clothes and
leave it two or three days.  And after the three days,
strain that water and keep int in a flask for washing
[your] face with it.

1: A modern azumbre is approximately 2 liters (1992 Real
Academia dictionary). The 1726 Real Academia dictionary
defines azumbre as 1/8 of an arroba or cantara, which is a
measurement used for wine.

2: Or possibly "machado", chopped, is meant

3: Also called "sea bellybutton"; a piece of shell that
grows on the foot of murexes and is used to close the
shell.  

4: tetilla: a man's nipple, Carduncellus caeruleus, or
conical.  


124 Receuta para hacer la taragontia para el rostro

     Tomar las raízes de la taragontia, muy lavadas y
raídas, y hacerlas tajadas delgadas y enhilarlas en un
hilo. Y ponerlas a secar de manera que se puedan moler. Y
molidas, pasarlas por un cedazo. Y sacar leche de pepitas
de calabazas y de adormideras que sea espesa. Y echar de
esta leche en los polvos hasta que se paren como lodo. Y
embarrar este lodo en una almolfía vidriada, y dejarlo
secar. Y después tornarlos a moler y tornar a hacer lo
mismo que antes con la leche. Y después de secos, tornar a
moler esto y cernerlo. Y al moler echarle un poco de
albayalde de espuma y ponerlos en una caja entre papeles a
lechos. Y quando se laven el rostro como se lo acaban de
lavar, tomar de estos polvos en un paño mojado, y vuelto el
paño lavarse con esto. Y si quisieren poner con ello un
poco de solimán es muy bueno.

Recipe for making green dragon (Arisaema dracontium)(?) for
the face
     Take the roots of the green dragon (Arisaema
dracontium)(?), very [well] washed and worn (1), and make
of them thin slices and thread them in (on?) a thread.  And
put them to dry so that they can be ground.  And ground,
pass them through a seive.  And take milk that is thick
from gourd and poppy seeds.  And put this milk in the
powder until it becomes like mud.  And make a coating of
(?) this mud in a glazed basin, and let it dry.  And
afterwards grind them again and again do the same as before
with the milk.  And after drying, grind this again and sift
it.  And in grinding put in a little foamy white lead (?,2)
and put them in a box in layers between papers.  And when
you wash your face like you have just washed it, take some
of this powder in/on a wet cloth, and the cloth turned wash
yourself with it.  And if you want to put with it a little
mercury chloride (3) it is very good.

3. The only definition I've found for soliman is that it is
made by combining mercury and chlorine; mercury chloride is
white, which fits with its use on the face.


143 Receta para mazapanes

     Tanto azúcar como almendras. Poner el azúcar al fuego
con agua de azahar. Y desque haya dado dos o tres hervores,
bajarlo y clarificarlo con su clara de huevo. Y tornarlo
luego a cocer hasta que se pare como miel; y bajarlo y
dejarlo resfriar. Y como esté frío, echar las almendras
majadas dentro. Y antes que se acabe de resfriar, amasarlo
todo muy bien. Y hacer los mazapanes, y ponerles por encima
su cara de azúcar molido y llevarlos al horno.

Recipe for marzipans
     As much sugar as almonds.  Put the sugar on the fire
with citurs blossom water.  And when it has given two or
three boils, lower it and clarify it with its (your?) egg
white.  And then return to cooking it until it ends up like
honey; and lower it and let it cool.  And when it is cold,
put the crushed almonds in.  And before it has finished
cooling, knead/mix it very well.  And make the marzipans,
and put on top their face of ground sugar and take them to
the oven.


144 Receta para blanquear el azúcar y limpiarla

     Poner el azúcar al fuego y, en comenzando a hervir,
batir dos o tres claras de huevos muy bien, y el espuma que
hicieren echarla en el azúcar. Y cuando el azúcar hiciere
espuma, espumarla muy bien. Y tornar a ponerle más de la
espuma de las claras de huevos, y tornar a espumarla. Y
hacer esto dos o tres vezes, y quedará buena.

Recipe for whitening sugar and cleaning it
     Put the sugar on the fire and, in coming to a boil,
beat two or three egg whites very well, and put the foam
they make into the sugar.  And when the sugar foams, skim
it well.  And again put in more of the foam of the egg
whites, and again skim it.  And do this two ro three times,
and it will be good.


145 Mudas para las manos

     Tomar una escudilla de zumo de raíces de lirio
cárdeno, y onza y media de jabón francés, y tanta manteca
de vaca fresca y sin sal como dos huevos. Cueza todo junto
en una ollica hasta que se espese. Y despondreislo tres
días en las manos, cada día dos veces, a la mañana una y a
la noche otra. Y después lo traeréis en las manos quince
días sin lavaros trayendo guantes siempre en las manos.

Ointment for the hands
     Take a bowl of purple iris root juice, and an ounce
and a half of french soap, and as much fresh and unsalted
cow lard as two eggs.  Cook all together in a small pot
until it thickens.  And put(?) it on your hands three days,
each day two times, in the morning once and at night
another.  And afterwards keep it on your hands fifteen days
without washing them, always wearing gloves on your hands.
