In this case they are probably talking about a very light, sweet bread, that
has been sliced and oven toasted.  They used to be available commercially as
Holland Rusk.  

Rusks are also a sweet soft textured biscuit.

Holland Rusk was commonly round and the word rusk appears to derive from
rotisca, a diminutive of the Latin, rota or wheel, which suggests that the
circular shape is the traditional form.
