It is my understanding that a warner is an illusion food. Food that is
made to look like another food which it is not. A warner is meant to be
eaten. Whereas a soteltie is more a decorated food that may or may not
be edible. A soteltie may not look like a food at all.

Often the line is somewhat blurred between a soteltie and a warner.

Another file which as some good examples of illusion foods/warners is
this one in the FEASTS section, which I did not list the other day:
ill-fd-feast-art (10K) 12/ 8/97 A feast consisting of illusion foods.

A few examples of some illusion foods are:
oysters - made of mushrooms, placed in shells and having 'pearls'.
Candied Walnuts stuffed back into their shells & glued shut.
Sugar paste peach pits as talked about here recently and provided at the
   Pennsic SCA-Cooks dinner.
Farced Chickens filled with raw ground beef & pork sausage mixture.
Gyngerbrede 'grapes' garnished with grape vines.
haslet - a string of batter-covered dried fruits made to resemble
   intestines.
eggshells filled with almond paste.
Trout Eggs Prepared so that People Think They Are Peas.
simmered birds hidden in hollow rye breads.
A boar's head made completely of cheese.
Mock Sturgeon.

Just a few period and SCA illusion foods found in a quick look through
my files. As mentioned in another message, I'm interested in getting
some pictures of some good illusion foods to place in the Florilegium.
