Some e-mail programs automatically recognise 1/2 and convert it to the
single-character figure, which people may not realize or may not know
how to stop.  There should be a setting in the options somewhere, kind
of like the auto-spell-correct, that can be un-clicked to stop this.  Or
else, try putting space in the sequence like- 1/ 2.
