And just to add to the rain of advice, jumping through academic hoops is
part of schooling these days.  Has been for a while.  Jump through the hoops
as best you can, and then thumb your nose at them by adding to your
knowledge whenever possible. Read up on things that interest you.  Don't let
them kill your love of learning.  Fight The Power!
