Ipomea alba is commonly known as the moonflower.  It is an annual vine
growing up to about 15 feet in length.  It is related to the morning glory
and the sweet potato, as you inferred.

Without quite a bit more detail about your "alien plant," I doubt I could
identify it.  It might be one of the Galanthus (see the URL below).  Or it
could be one of the Hippeastrums or possible a close relative of Clivia
caulescens.
