Brighid, I realise this it's a little late this time, but for next time what
you might want to do is get a carbon monoxide detector. They have little
plug-into-wallsocket ones which work excellently, though naturally this is
assuming you still have electricity. See here for details (this is the one I
have and it works well - when the stovetop lighter doesn't work and I try to
gas myself it goes off VERY loudly)

I'm sure you should be able to get something similar in the US. I figure
they're a small price to pay for piece of mind.
