Thanks, Kirsten, but these are at least a 1/4" long, and they fly.  They
are more like moths than flies or mosquitoes, etc.  They are bigger than
the fruit flies that appear like magic if you don't eat your bananas
promptly.  My ex got some in his kitchen in Germany.  These have
occasionally even gotten into tupperware, and once through the metal lid
of a glass jar.  They don't fly too fast, and you can swat them pretty
easily, but you don't much want the groceries they found first.  Oddly
enough, they almost never bother noodles or spaghetti.  Durham wheat too
hard for tiny teeth?  

Beats me where they came from--there is still snow on the lawns.
