ALBERT SONNENFELD:  THE FORK AND CIVILIZATION

Culinary Historians of Southern California will hear a lecture from
Albert Sonnenfeld, a notable authority on culinary culture and ethics,
at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the Mark Taper Auditorium,
Central Library. [Los Angeles Public Libraries' main branch, downtown
Los Angeles.]

Mr. Sonnenfeld, Chevalier Professor of French and Comparative
Literatures at USC, will focur on culinary utensils and the affect the
fork had on civilization.  He will discuss the development of Italian
cucinas in the "early modern" period, 15-16th Centuries, and how the
fork changed the course of cuisine.

Sonnenfeld has received much media attention for his English edition of
FOOD:  A CULINARY HISTORY (Columbia University, 1999).  he has been
featured on radio and TV talk shows and served as Director of the
Columbia University Press Series, "Arts of the Table:  Perspectives on
Culinary History."  Sonnenfeld is co-editor of the forthcoming OXFORD
BOOK OF CHEESE.

The Culinary Historians support the Central Library's collection of
cookbooks, including rare acquisitions and food-related ephemera.

Admission is free to this event and open to the public.  After a
question and answer session, refreshments will be served in the Library
