I seem to recall reading that the bocks and
dopplebocks were actually brewed to celebrate the
coming spring... after a harsh or unprofitable winter,
Bavarian farmers and whatnot would sit out in their
beer gardens and toast the new season with the brews
they had been working on through the winter.

Also, it should be noted that not all "heavy" beers
are low in alcohol.  Dextrin rich beers tend to be,
certainly, but that is not always the case.  Research
has found that, given enough time in the cask, even a
good portion of the so-called "unfermetables" can be
broken down (provided the yeast is still strong) into
fermentable substances.
