Many thanks, Anahita!  That's a wonderful description of miso, and will
be archived.  I can't think of anything Spanish like that, either. 
Vegamite, you Aussies?  ;-)

I'm reading a history of the later Norman kingdoms, particularly Henry I
and King Roger of Sicily.  The author keeps making comparisons and
quoting contemporary referances to the two.  There was apparently quite a
bit of cultural to and fro-ing, which indicates to me another conduit so
many recipes have taken, appearing in similar variations in quite
different collections.  I can't recall reading of any Sicilian
collections--can any of you?  There were a good number of cathedrals
built, and noble houses.  Ought to be a few household books surviving,
either noble or religious.
