Oh! That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the hit with the "clue"

I'm still not sure why the banana peel would end up in a midden
though, rather than just getting swept overboard. The Tudors/
Elizabethans, especially sailors, just don't seem to have be the
fastidious types.
