That is correct. Nicotine is one of the most potent insecticides known to
man. The nicotine  from one cigarette if injected into a horse all at once
would kill it almost instantly. My grandfather always used nicotine spray for
his garden needs. While I am unaware if such a use was period, I do know that
the use of tobacco was late period. :-) Pyrethrums and rotenone also fall
within the categoiry of 'natural' pesticides. Both are made from plants.
