All of the references I have been able to find point
to the 'mountain potato' as being Dioscorea Japonica
Thunb.  A different animal than the Taro, which I also
though it might have been at first glance.  However,
I'm not certain that Taro root is grown in Japan,
proper.  I know it is common along the Pacific Rim,
but I don't have any references that it was ever
cultivated in Japan.  Taro seems to require some
rather specific soil and water requirements.  At
least, none of the references I have seen mention
Japanese cultivation of Taro root.  But, absence of
evidence is not evidence of absence, right?
