[Sca-cooks] What kind of gum do I have?

I was browsing in an Asian Indian grocery store, and amongst the
spice I found a small packet labelled "Edible Gum". There was no
other identification, no scientific or Indian name. Because it was
cheap, and because I've been reading up on sugar plate, I brought
it home. I have done a web search, and cannot figure out what
kind of gum this is. It consists of small crystalline chunks, varying
in size from lentils to chickepeas, and in different shades of amber.
It has a mildly sweet odor.

Anyone know what this is, and what it's good for? The clerk at the
counter could not tell me. I'm hoping it's gum tragacanth, but I
know there are several kinds of edible gum.
