A ring, or a crunch?

I haven't been exposed to a lot of stories of Caligula's feasts, actually; much of what has survived in the way of info on Bootsie comes from Suetonius (offhand, I think half of Tacitus' account has survived, IIRC), who appears to have been the combined Rush Limbaugh and National Inquirer of his day. As I recall Theodor Mommsen maintained that the reliable historical evidence suggested that Caligula was, plain and simple, a monarchist who availed himself of every, single opportunity to show his contempt for, and desire to eliminate, the Senate. It does appear to make a fair amount of sense.

There are some interesting accounts of food activity in accounts of the
careers of both Vitellius and Heliogabulus, too.
