Uh, yeah... I had been in Sutherlin with James and his brother- we are
still pulling the darndest things out- we found their sled they other
day- it doesn't say 'Rosebud' but it does say 'Jimmy and Jeff Johnson'
on the underside... anyway, Wednesday, I drove back up to Eugene, picked
up the oldest daughter (Rotrude/Annie), stopped in Portland briefly, and
then drove to Redmond (loosely Seattle). We stayed overnight with some
old friends, and at 9 am found ourselves in a largish hall, listening to
a presentation and orientation at a college Annie is seriously
considering, Cornish College of the Arts (used to be Cornish Institute),
which is in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle. Had a delightful if
exhausting day, meeting with people, going over requirements and
admission and funding stuff (very expensive, unfortunately), finding out
what sort of opportunities are there for employment and/or grad work, we
toured several classrooms, talked with professors, saw the costume shop
(WAY COOL!), one of the theatres, and even went farther downtown to
where the scene shop is. They are in the middle of building a tree. (!)
Seriously nifty day. We stayed Thursday night and then left midday
Friday- had to do Pike Place so we went to the Market. It was just as
cool as I remembered. And I could not resist- I bought several chocolate
slug suckers, and an enormous string of fresh peppers, all different
kinds and colors. Gotta get Morwyn's mole recipe...

After the Market, we got on the freeway, with a detour through my
hometown (Yay Sumner!) and we almost got caught up in traffic and forced
to go to the football game, but I managed to weasel out (we didn't have
football game clothing with us), which was funny though- saw the band go
by and had an urge to put on some spats and a goofy hat... the little
drive-in where we all hung out closed a couple of years ago (waaahhh!!!)
so we couldn't get a Spartanburger and fries, but we did go down the
street to the Italian restaurant where the band used to hang out and got
dinner. Stopped in Puyallup and showed Annie a couple of things,
including the tiny place we lived in when she was a baby ("What- next to
that shack Mom?" "No, that shack was it..."). And then back to I-5, to
Portland, where we crashed for the night, and then in the morning I ran
here not just to Eugene, but to an event in the mountains east of
Eugene, then I turned around and came right back to Portland, where I
fell over and became incoherent. All told, some 1200+ miles in less than
a week. I am not going anywhere for awhile...

Anyway, the reason why I asked earlier about people in Seattle was
because if Annie goes to Cornish she will need some friendly faces in
the area, and some possible housing links. They don't have dorms and I
understand it can be interesting getting a room. But I figure next to
another Cornish student, an SCA house is most likely to have a clue on
weird schedules, strange noises, etc. Theatre Production majors
frequently have weird stuff in their hair and on their clothes, too...

Strange and frightening and sad, to go to look at a college...

I'm thinking about a nap now...
