[Sca-cooks] Today's atrocity

Jillene V. VanNostrand jillene at crosswinds.net

Hi everyone! I live in Northern VA (just south of DC). I was babysitting
when everything happened and I had no clue what was going on cause I
wasn't watching tv or anything. The woman I work for is a teacher at a
school just down the street from the Pentagon. She said she was teaching
class and all of a sudden she heard this huge explosion and the whole
building shook pretty bad. She teaches English as a second language to
barely literate foreign high school students. They all started freaking
because their families left their home countries to get away from stuff
like this and here it was happening here. Anyway, to keep them calm, she
turned on the news to find out what was going on and she was explaining
new vocabulary words to the students like 'hijacking' and 'demolished'.
She was quite freaked out by the time she got home. My husband is in the
Marine Corps stationed at Quantico and they're at threatcon Charlie
(only one entrance/exit open for the base, ID checks, lots of MPs and
dogs at the gate, etc). My husband is on watch tonight and there's an
armed guard and sentinels patrolling outside of the building he's on
watch at. He's a computer guru and he's in charge of the network there.
I'm supposed to pick him up at 2Am and I don't even know that they'll
let me back on base! Anyway, please remember to pray for everyone
tonight and to put a candle in your window for them. Take care!

Check with your local red cross to find out what they will need.
Evacuation centers may need a variety of things.

Word on NPR, from about 2 minutes ago, is do *not* go directly to any
Red Cross donation center, they are way overloaded. I imagine hospitals
are, too. They said to call 1-800-givelife for information on what you
should do.

'Lainie, you could try contacting the SCA group there directly - I'm
sure they're all talking about this, same as we are! Chicago is the
Shire of Gray Gargoyles, and the contact person listed on the Midrealm
site is Henry Warnok (Brian Hill), 773-866-2645,
libitugli at ameritech.net. I presume he is their seneschal. I'm trying
to load their webpage for more info, but I'm not having luck.

The server is back on.

They are basically closing down the "loop", which is the greater
downtown area. State and public buildings are closed down. Several
folks I know working in buildings downtown were told to leave. Several
of those folks using wheelchairs can't leave downtown as they have
closed the elevators at the "El" stations! Can't drive in through
highways as those are being closed down. They had tripled the number of
"El" trains leaving downtown, rumors of closing down these too.

It might be a little extreme, or not. Dunno. Chicago is a likely
target.

The world is insane.

What in the world are these folks supposed to do? Tumble down the

Cripes. What does it take to make folks think?

I've been hearing absolutely heart-rending reports of magnaminity and
graciousness, stories about people helping each other and practically
giving away the shirts on their backs. I'm sure that if someone is
stranded in a wheelchair at the top of the stairs, *someone* would have
the heart to carry them down. It may be slow and frustrating, but
people are helping each other. NYC has such a hard-nosed reputation,
it's amazing to see the outpouring of humanity. It's so sad, though,
that it takes a situation like this to make people show off their good
sides.

One of the cable news networks just said that the plane crash in PA
was going to be comandeered and sent to Camp David, but that it crashed
outside Pittsburgh.

Please pray, everyone. It's our mightiest defense right now.

Olwen, if you can, please go ahead and detail how his hospitality table
was.

There is not a lot that most of us can do about this tragedy except to
give blood and other help and support as we can. I see no reason to give
the terrorists another victory by letting them disrupt our lives any
more than is necessary.
