The word "Levant' is derived from an ancient Canaanite word
(Canaanite is the language from which Hebrew is derived). This word
is the root of the name for one of the countries in the area as well
as several mountain ranges in the region. The Levant is the region in
Southwest Asia that includes Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and
Israel-Palestine.

It does not in anyway derived from a French word, as someone mistakenly posted.
