My experience was merely to have someone rudely tell me that a woman wearing
pants wasn't period.  I politely replied that as a conquest era Magyar I was
a nomad and it was perfectly appropriate.  They left very quickly.

It really is a matter of people being rude.  There are also many people who
only feel better if they can be superior to someone.  My thought has always
been that even if you are sure that something isn't period you should adopt a
gentle approach.  It really boils down to what Mom always said "If you can't
say something nice, don't say anything at all."
