If I remember: the telephone system wasn't built to survive a
nuclear war. The Internet (at least in its original incarnation) was.

Now, whether or not both were built to survive too much traffic,
I don't know - but I suspect the 'net can handle that kind of thing
a bit better than can the regular phone system.

(The earthquake that hit Olympia, Washington, a few months
ago? My Laurel lives there. Getting email through was no problem,
but calling in was impossible, as the phone company blocked all
calls. I got a message to her by emailing someone in, ummm, Seattle
I think, who phoned her. Weird system - but that's what I like
about the SCA: we all know someone who knows someone. No 6
degrees of separation; I suspect we're down to about 3.)
