[Sca-cooks] Is everyone OK?

I'm really glad to hear that.

I'm still in Austin (Hi, Stefan! I'll call later!),
but my family is spread out all over the east coast:
my sister in Manhattan, my parents & step-parents and
one brother in DC and one brother and his family in
South Carolina. I was finally able to reach the SC
contingent about 1:00 eastern yesterday, and my SIL
had just gotten confirmation that the rest of the
family was okay.

I was able to reach my sister about a half hour later.
She and her boyfriend live in Brooklyn and were
driving into Manhattan when the second airplane came
in. They got back home to find their apartment filled
with dust and debris. They stopped at the grocery
store, and my sister said "What do you buy when the
World Trade Center has just blown up? Tuna?" They're
both okay, but still in shock.

I didn't know that my father had just relocated from
offices in the Pentagon, and so I was quite panicked
until I got confirmation that he and his wife were at
a BBQ place in Crystal City. He had the gumbo -- it
was mostly chicken and sausage, no okra and no fish
heads. They got home late yesterday evening, but
since he's National Guard and she's FEMA, they're back
out today helping with whatever they can.

My mother was downtown until they started evacuating
her agency. First she was told the Metro wasn't
running, and then she was told it was running but not
to Springfield. She decided to head down and take the
first train she could, and she'd be able to call her
husband or my brother to come get her. She said there
were about 2,000 people on her Metro train, and they
were packed belly to butt, but the train made almost
all of its stops, and she got home to Springfield
okay. She was able to drive home from there without
any trouble at all, and spent the next hour and a half
trying to reach the rest of the family by telephone.
When she couldn't get a line out, she fell asleep. So
she was the last one we actually heard from, but was
the first one home safely. I guess it was about 5:00
eastern when I finally talked to her.

Our troup cancelled its performance last night,
although some of them went in to town for workshops
and distraction. I spent the rest of the day trying
to re-establish some control over my environment, and
cleaned and did laundry and cooked dinner.

I guess what's really bugging me now is that I can't
get there to help pick up the pieces. I feel
powerless.
