On Rosh Hashana night we say certain blessings on certain symbolic foods.
This is our way of asking that the Master of the Universe fill the upcoming
year with blessings. Some of these are really appropriate this year. This
brief guide comes from the Artscroll Siddur (prayer book).

Carrots: that our merits increase
Leek or Cabbage: that our enemies be decimated
Beets: that our advasaries be removed
Dates: that our enemies be consumed
Gourd (pumpkin or sweet squash): that the decree of our sentence be torn
asunder. and may our merits be proclaimed before you
Pomegranate: that our merits increase as the seeds of the pomegranate
Fish head: that we be fruitful and multiply; that we be as the head and not
as the tail

(I especially like the relationship between the beets and our enemies being
consumed)

Shana Tova U Mituka (A swwet and happy new year)
