My Marble slab will take hot pots straight from the oven.  I ahve found a
good source of CHEAP marble.....Fire place shops.
when they cut out the marble surround (ugh!!!) they are left with a bit they
sell off cheap..£20 for a LARGE 2' square piece and it is thick.
