[Sca-cooks] Poultry update....

Well, since I was off-line for a bit, I thought I'd
bring you all an update on the ducks and chickens.

Houdini still limps, but instead of 1/2 oz of fluff
and attitude, he and the rest of them are up to about
4 oz of scruffy feathers and attitude. He seems to
like helping me on my computer, and he's very
demanding. The other day, he was visiting me at my
computer desk, and I thought I'd go get a cup of
coffee. He decided I was taking too long, so when
calling didn't bring me back, he hopped off the desk,
off the chair, and charged across the house after me.
Jezebel, the other cat, was most astonished to find
herself being run over by half a mouthful of feathers-
she got out of his way.

The ducks have become champions of distance pooing,
and have learned to herd outside to the poultry yard.
Can't leave them with the chickens- they tend to want
to prove they're tougher- they're certainly much
bigger. The three little brown ones have been bullying
the big white one, Donald, too- they've plucked his
sides bald, so he now looks like he has a feather
mohawk. They're learning to back off, though, when I
yell "Fricasee". Donald, though, is bigger than some
we've had for dinner at Pennsic- in fact, he's bigger
than the one we had for dinner tonight.

The cats are fascinated by the whole thing. When I
take everybody out to play in the yard (it's still too
cold to leave them outside at night) they watch,
"Chicken TV". In fact, we all enjoy it- no
commercials. Pickett, though, decided to try to make
it interactive- he got caught with his paw through the
fence, fishing for chickens. When I clocked him, he
didn't speak to me for three days- he still won't go
near the fence when I put them out.

It will be time to harvest the cockerels in a couple
more months. Anybody want to come up with some
recipes? Houdini and the ducks are safe- they've
become pets, but some good period recipes for chicken
would be in order. I'd like some ideas for recipes
using the parts we have, but can rarely try because
store bought chickens don't come with them- blood,
feet, like that.....
