Also sprach Liam Fisher, re "Gods and Monsters" (a reference to a
line in Whale's "The Bride of Frankenstein"):

Huh? Uh, no, he plays a homophobic landscaper, IIRC, for whom the
elderly ex-director Whale (McKellan) develops an infatuation. What
was interesting was that his character is genuinely homo-_phobic_,
not just your usual hateful basher type. He's just afraid of Whale's
attentions, and confused and afraid of his response, even though he
doesn't seem especially welcoming to them.
It required actual acting, sans stunts, heavy makeup, special
effects, or jokes. You don't often see Frasier doing that; some would
argue he isn't capable.
