Absolutely the truth.

As i have said, nearly all our events are camping events. Flieg hosts
an open Bardic on Saturday nights in his large sunshade the BC
(Battle Cruiser) (at my first event he borrowed a couple, so there
were three set up, forming a huge hall, with a multitude of West
Kingdom style fire pits (no ground fires allowed here) arranged down
the middle and oil lanterns softly lighting the space. Hospitable,
helpful, and humorous, beneath his curmudgeonly shell. He's a peach.
(see, this message has food content :-)

He often doesn't dress very differently when he goes to work from
what he wears at events - imagine, there he is in a leather hat, a
blue tabard, not quite knee high boots. And he often rides a bicycle.
We actually don't live that far from each other, so sometimes i pass
him "flying" down the street...

But i have to say, in my experience, most of our Peers - Royalty, too
- are pretty approachable out here in the central West. I never
understood "peer fear" until i heard stories about some other
kingdoms. That's not to say that all our Peers and Royalty are warm
and fuzzy, but, well, i met a lot of people in my first year or two
and never had any idea that they were in either of those two
categories until much later. A lot of them don't bother with insignia
or regalia except when they're called upon in a Court.

Now some of this may be because, as the place where the SCA was
founded, we have a lot of "old timers" and Peers (it's A.S. 36 going
on A.S. 37 and we have many people who've been involved for over 20
years, some even 36 years). And part of it may be because we have
three Crown Tourneys a year with no restrictions on the list other
than being an authorized fighter and a paying member of the SCA whose
consort is a paying member of the SCA, so perhaps we have more
Royalty than some places.

Anahita
not a Peer, but i usually don't wear my danglies either,
in the laid back West -
...I wonder when someone is going to make a mobile hot tub and bring
it to events...
