It is painfully simple and tasty, and so obviously a meal to feed 6
people in Post WWII USA on a house cleaners' income. I'm only 35, but
my Grandmother would serve it to us when we visited, and my dad and his
brother would demand it every visit. His other siblings hate it (not an
uncommon polarity with poverty food).

So what poverty foods does everyone else remember?
Until I was about 7 my parents were struggling, and whilst the thing that
really sticks out in my mind is my Dad's excellent soufflés (on Fridays
because we couldn't afford fish), both of my sisters and I still absolutely
loathe Curried Sausages, which was pretty much the cheapest meat you could
buy then. I'm still not terribly keen on Indian food because of that. Oddly
enough, my Mum still likes them.
