This was sent to another list I read, while it
isn't about cooking, it should be of interest to
those of us in the SCA. I am hoping that those
from Drakenwald will perhaps stage a protest, in
costume perhaps? This is such a shame.

Medieval ship to be abandoned

The remains of a medieval ship are to be
abandoned on the riverbed where they were found
so building work on a new arts centre can be
completed.
Timbers from the ocean-going vessel were
discovered two months ago during the construction
of a theatre and arts centre in Newport, South
Wales. The trading ship, dating from 1420, has
been described as one of the most exceptional
finds since the Mary Rose. Archaeologists said
it has remained in exceptional condition on the
banks
of the River Usk. But the team working on the
excavation have been told by Newport City
Council they must abandon their project in three
weeks to allow building work to finish.

The Times reports the council says the whole
ship, estimated to be more than 25 metres in
length, does not need to be preserved and
elements can be used to create a digital copy.

Ron Inglis, the council's museum and heritage
officer, said: "It is not realistic or practical
to excavate it and preserve it."

Gillian Hutchinson, curator of the National
Maritime Museum, said: "It's a huge pity. We
don't have anything else like it. Medieval ships
still in one piece are extremely rare and there
is
absolutely nothing from this period."

The site will be open to the public tonight
and next Wednesday between 5pm and 7pm before it
is covered.
