Someone (I could be wrong, but the name Liadnan of Sparrowhaven comes
to mind, rightly or wrongly -- in which case I apologize) had
subscribed to the cooks' list via a work account (a bank, I think),
and then gone to Pennsic or on some other trip, leaving an automatic
e-mail reply function in effect. The gist was that this person was
away from her desk, and would be for a while, and if anybody had a
problem they should contact Mario Nebbits, the sysadmin. So, for each
post that arrived at the person's account, the cook's list got a
separate auto-reply telling us to contact Mario Nebbits. Posts in
which people complained about the Mario Nebbits auto-reply generated
still more auto-replies. So, at one point, a couple of years ago, we
had an unusually high traffic on the cooks' list during Pennsic
(usually, of course, it's low), mostly posts either from, to, or
about Mario Nebbits. Whom none of us had ever met, seen, or spoken
to. But eventually there was some speculation on this list about
Mario Nebbits' mama, appearance, sexual proclivities, personal
hygiene, and method of eating asparagus.

Some people will do anything to keep a list going during Pennsic ;-).
And then, of course, we could always discuss Twinkies, again.
