According to the quick ref, Navarre (created as a Kingdom in 905) was ruled
by a Basque dynasty from the 9th to 13th Centuries. Under Sancho III,
Navarre rulled most of Christian Spain, including Castile (which became
independent again after Sancho's death). Early in the 14th Century, Navarre
came under French rule (sorta, as an in-(semi-)dependent kingdom). In 1515,
Navarre south of the Pyrennes was annexed by Spain (by Ferdinand V of Spain,
previous F. II of Aragon). Lower Navarre, north of the Pyrennes continued
as an independent kingdom until 1589 when it was annexed by France.
