During the first half of the 20th Century most pep squads were male.  The
50's and the 60's were mostly all girl squads (with the occasional male
gymnast for lifting and catching).  Then there was a transition to more
mixed squads as cheerleading became a competition sport.

Huh? I thought it was now common to have cheerleaders of both sexes. At
least my high school did. (in 1975) Perhaps because of the Title IX laws.
