I remember reading the short story in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, then seeing the Twilight Zone epsode and thinking that Rod Serling had taken a good story and mucked it up.

Anyone remember the classic Twilight Zone episode? Based on a (much better)
story by, I think, Damon Knight.
