Now we're talking closer to my generation. I remember when a high school girl couldn't wear pants to school, but could wear a skirt so short she didn't dare sit down.
Were things "simpler" back then? I don't think so.
Were things better? Yes, and no.
I've only lived a little over half a century and I've seen a lot of changes, but people in general seem to be the same. Food goes in one end and out the other, just as it always has.

kept asking why they would only show him above the waist.

We got a day off from school when JFK was assassinated. I shut myself
in my room and wrote a poem, which i mailed to the White House. I
received a black edged card in thanks. Maybe it's in the Kennedy
library even now...

I attended a Beatles concert when i was in high school. A couple
years before, i attended a Rolling Stone concert - probably their
first or second US tour.

I participated in the first big anti-Viet Nam war march on the
Pentagon, the one that Norman Mailer wrote a book about. We were
trapped there by US Marshalls overnight with no food, no water, and
no, uh, sanitary facilities. The house mother at the dorm of my
college didn't understand why i didn't ask one of those nice men to
notify the school where i was, after i explained that there were no
phones there.

A few months later, I was one of a group of "freaks" who used to get
let into the Electric Circus on St. Marks Place in NYC for free, so
there would be some "atmosphere" when people came in from New Jersey
and the New York suburbs to be where it was "hip".

The following summer i went to San Francisco, where i lived in the
Haight Ashbury in an old Victorian full of actual published and
somewhat infamous Beatnik poets.
