Hey, Psst, Aurore, wanna talk about what *I* would fix???
For the faint of heart, you might wanna not read the end of this post...
One particularly interesting experience was being invited with my father to
a friend's of his village. This was in Mali. As we were guests of a "long
lost son" of the village, there was a big party. Excited folks would walk
around mumbling something to the effect of "goody, tonight we're eating
'cousin'".
There were a few items cooked on a spit, including a few monkeys. They
were fairly small ones, and I don't know what "brand" they were, but likely
not baboon or chimpanzees, smaller than that. But bigger than
capucines. In any case, the whole beast, on a spit, over the fire, slow
roasted.
The thing is, imagine what a skinned monkey on a spit looks like??? Yeah.
you got it... Looks like a baby!
For some reason, the choice part is the hand. Tender and tasty, especially
the palm. As we were guests of honour, we had the (dubious?) pleasure of
being offered a hand each. I remember, and likely will a loooong time,
having this hand, laying on its back, long fingers kinda curled up, in my
plate...
It was good, as I recall. I was about 14 at the time. A darkish meat,
strong in flavour but not overpowering. Bit sweet.
