If all you were needing the sugar for, was to
sweeten hot beverages, why don't you try the little
swizzle sticks with the rock candy on it?

It is available in candy stores, and those highway
stores (Stop here for beef jerky - you know), and
the Stash Tea Company sells it.

These work really well, and you don't have to worry
about the sugar going bad - it's a once or twice use
type thing.
