I don't think it's used "incorrectly" so much as
people get sick of
having to explain in detail what they do and don't eat
over and over
again.

**I do agree that it's often used incorrectly, though
I do understand why.  I just call myself a strict
vegetarian, which usually does the trick (I eat dairy
and eggs, no meat/poultry/seafood or, as a friend once
said - I eat nothing that has a face).  Webster's
dictionary defines vegetarianism as "the theory or
practice of living on a diet made up of vegetables ,
fruits, grains, nuts, and sometimes eggs or dairy
products".  Sounds good to me.
