Hi!
I was rooting around in the basement & came across an old letter (1992)from
Elise/Alys regarding food coloring.  We were discussing colors for dyed
eggs. She cites a friend who used red cabbage to make shades of blue, red
onion skins for pale blue, and frozen blueberries for a pale gray-blue. The
color is extracted by lengthy boiling or steeping.
She also cites a nespaper article on natural dyes for Easter eggs that says
to use 1 tablespoon white vinegar to 1 cup of water in an enamel or glass
pot, & then add the cut up vegetable matter. The vinegar may not be
necessary or desirable if you're not dyeing eggs.
