Still is, in dog circles. A friend of mine used to show her Irish
Wolfhound, who was a Champion bitch. This was very wonderful... meant
she was a fantastic animal!

IIRC, each breed would compete for Best of Breed, and then Best of
Opposite Sex. Then all the winners at the show would compete for Best
Dog and Best Bitch.  She got points for each win at each level, and a
certain number of points made her a champion.
