Phlip, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I know I still
occasionally cry over my Missy's death, and that was 8 years ago. She
was the kind of dog who was always there when nobody else could
understand, who licked the high-school-angst tears off my face every
time and snuggled in bed with me every night. She cried when I went
away to college. Now that I'm older and a Respectable Citizen ;) as
opposed to a student, we've adopted another dog who has our heart. I'm
sure someday I will cry for Cooper the way I cry for Missy, but he'll
never replace her. Nor will any dog ever replace him. It sounds like
you had the same kind of relationship with Stubbe. And it sounds like
she couldn't have shared all that love with more deserving people.

Selene, you mentioned getting another dog only weeks after your Sheila
died. I had to smile - I understand exactly what you meant. When my
darling cat, Romeo, died last summer, I was right out looking to adopt
another. We found Tamlin, who is an absolute clown, and occasionally
lucky that he's so darned cute. It wasn't that we were looking to
replace Romeo, but there was a physically empty space in our home that
needed to be filled with something warm, and there were so many
deserving animals languishing in cages and kennels at rescues and
shelters. I felt it was an honor to Romeo to pass on his cushy pillow
to another sweet, deserving animal.
