A candle flame is hollow, you have the wick saturated in liquid fuel
(wax/tallow/etc) then a small shell of vaporized fuel, then the flame.
Non braded wicks will stay relatively vertical and not bur very well
since they stay in a small chimney of wax vapor.
Braded wicks are what's known as "self consuming" They curl a little
to push the end of the wick into the cone of flame so that it burns
off at a rate regulated by the available fuel height (the pool at the
bottom of the wick) and capillary action.
Now, Why they want a double wick is anybody's guess. Mine would be
that they wanted a larger source flame, but as soon as the cotton lit,
you'd have a *very* large wick... hmmmm.
I'm suprised they didn't specify a beeswax vrs tallow candle. my
guess would be tallow.
