It's kinda interesting. I would stay away from Rue on general principles,
but one of the books that I came across about controlling fertility,
_Regulating menstruation : beliefs, practices, interpretations_ edited by
Van de Walle and Renne, included an article which analyzed the effects of
various traditional abortifacents, and found that rue and pennyroyal herbs
were not significantly effective but that oil of rue and oil of pennyroyal
(the 19th century abortifacents) did have some small effect. I believe
the article in question (I'm looking at the OCLC record for the books) is
"Pharmacological properties of emmenagogues: a biomedical view" by
Stefania Siedlecky

So I still wouldn't cook with it for general consumption-- or with
pennyroyal-- but for an A&S entry, CLEARLY LABELLED, it seems like it
might be ok.
