Mush is a generic when talking about anything soft and pulpy.  When you are
discussing cereal porridge, it is specifically cornmeal porridge in any of
its various incarnations.  For example, the term "fried mush" means
specifically corn meal cooked to the consistency of a dry polenta shaped
into a loaf, sliced and fried (usually in bacon drippings).

Oatmeal might be "mushy," but it's really not "mush."
