Well, i never found the recipe i thought i saw for Medieval Near
Eastern dried meat.

I'm currently reading Sir Richard Burton's two-volume travels to
Medina and Mecca. Well out of period, i know :-)

He certainly mentions what they eat while traveling, first from Cairo
to the city of Suez where they caught a boat to Arabia; then from
Yambu' to Medina (that's as far as i've gotten in my reading in
Volume One).

Nary a sign of dried meat. They do eat fruit leather: described as
Turkish, it was made of dried apricots and called "mare's skin"; it
was eaten softened in water, then eaten as is or spread on bread.

If i come across any 19th century Middle Eastern dried meat mentions,
i'll post to the list.

If anyone is interested in what they did eat on their travels, let me
know and i'll post to the list. No recipes, but some evocative
descriptions.
