The Chinese had gunpowder something like 400AD (2800 by Chinese
calendar?)and at that time they had cannon made of bamboo wrapped with rope.
They fired both solid rounds and exploding rounds) They did explode on
regular basis but it was a cannon:) I think the cast (metal) cannon in china
dates to about 700 or 900 AD at the earliest. I am to lazy to go dig out the
book to get exact dates unless someone really needs to know :) I beleive
that the "Glossary of construction of Arms and Armor" had some refferences
that are European. First mention I can remember was 1301 Amberg Germany
where they built a large gun , Ghent 1313 , Florence 1325, Germans 1328.
Edward III used them at the seige of Cambrai in 1339 so there is period
refference to cannon or heavy gun. The chinese predate these by many years.
Remeber that the Europeans brough gun powder back from China and the Chnese
used rockets and artillery for military purposes for a few hundred years
before the Europeans even knew about them. Check "The History of the Cannon"
I beleive that Stone is the author.
